Apr 2, 2024

The College of Optical and Electronic Technology, established in March 2007, is originated from the Optical Metrology and Testing program founded by Academician Wang Daheng, the "Father of Optics" and a key figure in China's nuclear weapons and space programs in 1986. The college currently has 166 faculty members, 1,566 undergraduate students, and 732 doctoral and master's students.

[Faculty Team]

The college currently employs 140 full-time faculty members, of whom 93.6% hold doctoral degrees. Among them, there are 35 professors with senior titles and 46 associate professors. The faculty includes 9 nationally recognized talents and 53 provincially or ministerially recognized talents. One faculty member has received the inaugural Zhejiang Province Young Science and Technology Talent Award. The college boasts 2 key scientific innovation teams recognized by Zhejiang Province and one of the first Zhejiang Province universities' Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams.

Renowned figures in the field of optics such as Academician Mu Guoguang, who served as the university's Honorary President and advisor for the Optical Engineering discipline, and Academician Zhuang Songlin, who previously served as President and head of the Optical Engineering discipline, have long been involved with the college's development. Eminent scholars like Chen Xingdan, Jin Guofan, Zhou Bingkun, Ye Shenghua, Zhou Liwei, and Li Tongbao have consistently supported the college. Additionally, Professor Gu Tianbei, President of the International Society for Optics and Photonics, Professor Bao Xiaoyi, an academician of the Royal Society of Canada, and Professor Pfeifer, Chair of the International Optical Metrology, serve as honorary professors. Other honorary (visiting, adjunct) professors include Yang Zhenhuan, Luo Yi, Ma Xiakang, Chen Xiaoshuang, Yao Hejun, Shen Ping, Yu Rongjin, Xie Rongjun, Yang Liyou, Sun Min, Sun Zhongzhou, Shen Jinxian, Fang Zhilie, and Chen Zhichao.

[Teaching]

The college offers four undergraduate programs: Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, and Functional Materials. The Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering program is recognized as a "National First-Class Program", "National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Program", "National Featured Program", and "Zhejiang Province Advantageous Program", and received engineering education accreditation in 2018. The Electronic Science and Technology program is recognized as a "National First-Class Program", "Zhejiang Province First-Class Program", "Zhejiang Province Key Program", and "Zhejiang Province Featured Program", and is accredited by the Ministry of Education's Engineering Education Program and included in the Ministry's Excellence Engineer Training Plan. Functional Materials is recognized as a Zhejiang Province Featured Program. The course "Principles of Optics" is designated as a National First-Class Course. The college has received two second prizes for Zhejiang Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards and contributed to a national teaching achievement award.

[Research and Social Services]

Faculty members of the college have led and received numerous awards, including two second prizes for National Technological Invention Awards, three first prizes for Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Awards, one first prize from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine for Science and Technology, one first prize from the Chinese Instrument and Meter Society Science and Technology Award, one second prize for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Research Achievements in Higher Education, six second prizes for Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Awards, four third prizes for other provincial and ministerial-level awards, and four awards from social organizations such as the Chinese Metrology Society. In the past five years, the college has led over 500 science and technology projects, including 131 national-level projects (such as National Key R&D Programs, international cooperation projects, and National Natural Science Foundation projects), 84 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and has been granted over 300 patents, with more than 100 patent achievements commercialized. The annual growth rate of research funding has exceeded 20% over the past three years, reaching 66.7056 million yuan in 2022.

The college has established the university's first Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education—Metering and Testing Technology and Instrument Engineering Research Center, and the university’s first Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory—Modern Metering and Testing Technology and Instrument Key Laboratory. Additionally, the college has built six other significant provincial and ministerial-level industry-specific research platforms, including the National "Functional Materials Metrology and Testing Standard Demonstration International Science and Technology Cooperation Base", the "Micro-nano Fabrication and Optoelectronic Detection International Science and Technology Cooperation Base", the "Optical Sensing and Imaging Metrology National Market Regulatory Administration Key Laboratory", and the "Rare Earth/Magneto-optical Functional Materials National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory". The college is a corporate member of the Chinese Optical Society and the Chinese Instrument and Meter Society and a council member of the International Committee of Weights and Measures.

[Disciplines and Graduate Education]

The college offers two primary disciplines: Optical Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology. The Optical Engineering discipline received doctoral degree authorization in 2021, making it one of the first disciplines at our university to offer both doctoral and master's degrees. In 2023, the discipline successfully established a postdoctoral research station in Optical Engineering, marking it as one of the first postdoctoral research stations at our university.

Over the years, the college has aligned its development with national, regional, and industry needs. It has consistently focused on nurturing talent with strong ideals and beliefs, adapting to emerging challenges, and possessing a sense of responsibility and dedication. The college has produced numerous high-caliber professionals. Graduate students from the college have received 36 National Scholarships and more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level honors, including the Chinese Instrument and Meter Society Scholarship and Zhejiang Province Outstanding Master's Thesis awards. Each year, about 10% of the master's graduates pursue doctoral studies at renowned universities both domestically and internationally. The college has also supplied a significant number of industry talents to well-known optoelectronic high-tech companies such as Huawei, Hikvision, Dahua, Uniview, and Sunny Optical. Additionally, it has trained several high-level metrology professionals for international metrology organizations and national defense optical metrology stations.

[Student Achievements]

In the past three years, undergraduate students from the college have achieved over 50 national awards and more than 110 provincial awards in high-level extracurricular scientific and technological activities, including the National College Students' "Challenge Cup" Entrepreneurship Competition, the "Internet Plus" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National College Students' Electronic Design Competition, the National College Students' Optoelectronic Design Competition, the National College Students' Intelligent Vehicle Competition, and the National College Students' Integrated Circuit Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
