The College of Life Sciences was founded in September, 2001. There are five majors: Bioengineering, Health Inspection and Quarantine, Animal and Plant Quarantine, Food Quality and Safety, and Pharmacy. We have right to confer master degree for first-level discipline of Biology and professional master degree for Pharmacy, currently with 873 undergraduates and 436 postgraduates.

Three departments are surbordinate to the college: Department of Biology, Department of Food Science and Department of Pharmacy. It also boasts two university-level research institutes: Research Institute of Biosecurity and Food Science, Research Institute of Endangered Rare Wildlives and Biodiversity. Meanwhile, there are 7 college-level institutes: Research Institute of Food Identification and Functional Assessment, Research Institute of Ecology and Inspection and Quarantine of Insects and Tea & Chrysanthemum, Research Institute of Agricultural  Food Products Hazard Control Technology, Research Institute of Biometrics and Inspection and Quarantine Technology, Research Institute of Bioresources and Diversity, Research Institute of Food Processing and Quality Control, Research Institute of Microreaction Synthesis Technology. Currently, the College has 116 faculty members, including 103 teaching staff, among which 24 are with senior professionals and 32 are associate senior professionals, and 100 have doctoral degree.

The College boasts its extraordinary talent resources, with 1 recognized as the first and the second level talent of the National Hundred-Thousand Talents Program, 1 visiting Professor of the Yangtze River Scholar Program, 1 listed in the Top Young Talents of National Ten-Thousand Talents Program, 1 as Zhejiang Provincial Specially Employed Experts, 23 listed in the "New Century 151 Talents Program", 1 as the Scientific and Technological Leading Talent of Zhejiang Ten-thousand Talents Program, 7 enrolled in the Leading Talents Incubation Program of  universities in Zhejiang province, 7 talents who have won the Zhejiang Provincial Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, and 6 young and middle-aged academic leader of Zhejiang higher education institutions.

The College has 1 major (Biology) recognized as Zhejiang Provincial the "13th Five Year Plan" first-class discipline (B Class), and 2 majors (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Food Sciences) listed as Zhejiang Provincial the "12th Five Year Plan" key discipline. It also has 3 CJLU key disciplines: Ecology, Animal Science and Microbiology. On the research side, we have built 7 provincial and ministry level research platforms, including National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Marine Food Processing Quality Control Technology and Instruments, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Biometrics and Inspection and Quarantine Technology, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Special Agricultural Products Quality and Hazard Control Technology, International Sci-Tech Cooperation Base for Agricultural Products Safety and Measurement &Testing. The College also has 2 Zhejiang Provincial Key Innovation Team: The agricultural biological industrial innovation team for plant-, animal- and microbe-based pharmacy industry, and the agricultural product safety standards and inspection technology innovation team. The biometrics and inspection and quarantine team was one of the earliest "National Huang Danian Style University Teaching Team". The two courses of Plant Biology, and Virtual Simulation Experiment of Hog Slaughter Inspection and Quarantine were recognized as the national first-Class courses. The College has founded two Zhejiang provincial experiment teaching demonstration centers: The Biological Test Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center, and the Food Safety, Inspection and Test Experiment Teaching Center. We also have founded a provincial talent development innovation experimental zone: the Innovative Development Center for Talents’ Practical Skills in Majors of Biological Inspection and Quarantine.

For the past five years, the College of Life Sciences has received numerous funds from 68 national research funding projects, including National Key Research and Development Program, Joint Key Program of Regional Innovation and Development of National Natural Science Fund; 79 Provincial Projects which includes Zhejiang Provincial Key Development Program and Excellent Youth Foundation of Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation. To date, it has been granted a cumulative fund of ¥145 million. In return, our diverse research community has published over 480 academic papers, among which over 280 were published on international peer-reviewed journals indexed by SCI and EI and over 90 of them were published on a range of top journals such as Science, Proceedings of National Academy of Science, and Pest Management Science. One research achievement was granted National Technology Invention Awards (Second Prize) and 14 others were awarded with Ministry of Education Science and Technology Award, Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Award, Research Achievement Award for Market Regulation; 130 Invention Patents were granted domestically or internationally and the College has hosted or participated the development of 23 national standards.
