College of Quality and Safety Engineering

Feb 28, 2023

The College of Quality and Safety Engineering was established in March 2007 on the basis of the educational philosophy of "Metrology as University’s Cornerstone, Standards as its Code of Conduct, and Quality as its Career Goal". It aims to cultivate talents in engineering professional both in management and engineering application by relying on the industry and strengthening the characteristics.

The College has a team of teachers with solid theoretical foundation, and rich teaching and scientific research experience. At present, there are 102 faculty members in the college, including 88 full-time teachers, 5 experimental teachers, and 9 administrators. Among the full-time teachers, there are 16 with senior titles, 28 associate professors, and 76  teachers with doctoral degree. Besides, the college has a number of talents, including 1 winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 National Talent of the New Century Hundred-Thousand Talents Project, 1 winner of the Zhejiang Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 Young and Middle-aged Academic Leaders of Zhejiang Province, 5 Zhejiang Provincial 151 Talents, 3 leading talents of universities in Zhejiang Province, and 27 honorary professors and part-time (visiting) professors.

The College has three first-level disciplines: Safety Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering (jointly built). Among them, Safety Science and Engineering is the key discipline in the 12th Five-Year Plan and the first-class discipline in the 13th Five-Year Plan of Zhejiang Province (class B), and it has the only master's degree granting right in Zhejiang Province; the discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering ranks among top 1% in ESI. There are four master's programs in the fields of Safety Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Resources and Environment (professional master in Safety Engineering and Environmental Engineering) and Mechanical Engineering (professional master in Mechanical Engineering), with more than 250 postgraduate students.

The College has established four undergraduate majors: Quality Management Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, with more than 1,000 students on campus. The major of Quality Management Engineering is a national first-class major, a national characteristic major, the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", a key major in Zhejiang Province, a pilot major in Zhejiang Province's "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", and a featured major of Zhejiang Province's "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan", national "five-star" major (the highest star), ranking first in similar majors nationwide. The major of Safety Engineering is a national first-class major, the first major in safety engineering in Zhejiang Province and the major with the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education. It is the first-class undergraduate major of Zhejiang Province and the emerging characteristic major of Zhejiang Province. The major of Industrial Engineering is the characteristic major of foreign exchange and cooperation; Environmental Engineering has come to the fore internationally through global cooperation and expansion.

The college adheres to the concept of "relying on the quality inspection industry, cultivating high-end talents, and serving local development", and actively responses to the major needs of national and regional economic and social development and strategic emerging industries. We have cooperation with Ministry of Emergency Management of P.R.C., China Special Equipment Inspection & Research Institute, Zhejiang Provincial Emergency Management Department, Zhejiang Academy of Safety Science and Technology, Zhejiang Provincial Special Equipment Inspection & Research Institute, National E-commerce Product Quality Monitoring Center and so on, and have made great achievements in the development of safety standards and regulations, the exploration of methods for special equipment safety testing, and the establishment of safety evaluation systems, which has been recognized by the academic community and the industry.

In the past five years, the teachers of the college have won 6 provincial first-class courses, 4 provincial education reform projects, 7 scientific and technological achievement awards above the provincial and ministerial level (including 6 second prizes), presided over more than 60 projects above the provincial level, and more than 400 projects entrusted by enterprises. The total research funding is more than 59 million yuan. The teachers have published  more than 300 academic papers; granted more than 270 patents of various types, including more than 100 invention patents.

The College has built 47 laboratories, covering an area of 3,100 m2, and more than 2,400 sets of instruments and equipment with a total value of more than 44 million yuan, including 40 large instruments with a unit price of more than 200,000 yuan and 25 with a unit price of more than 300,000 yuan. The college has one "13th Five-Year Plan" Zhejiang provincial key experimental teaching demonstration center "Quality Engineering Experimental Teaching Center", one Zhejiang provincial key laboratory "Key Laboratory of Furniture Testing Technology and Research " (jointly built). At the same time, we also participate in the construction of provincial experimental platforms such as "Innovation Platform for Special Equipment and Energy Environmental Metrology Technology Service" and "Collaborative Innovation Center of Quality Testing Technology and Instrument". The laboratories have undertaken more than 70 courses of experimental teaching, mainly including quality/safety testing practice teaching, and other practical teaching tasks for students majoring in standardization as second degree and related elective courses for majors of Product Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanics, Electrics, and Automation for Standardized second degree program and related elective courses.

Students in the College strive to forge ahead and actively participate in various activities. They have performed outstandingly in innovation activities, various extracurricular science and technology activities and social practice activities, which have achieved good results. In the past 3 years, 16 national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training programs have been approved, and 11 provincial new seedling projects, and 43 CJLU scientific research projects have been approved.
