II. Physical Science (Applied Physics and Acoustics)
The Physics Department has two undergraduate majors in physical science—Applied Physics and Acoustics. In the first three semesters, students study fundamental courses in mathematics, physics and computer science. From the fourth semester on, they will choose their major based on interest and performance evaluation.
[Applied Physics]
The major of applied physics focuses on the application of physics and is a bridge between physics and engineering, such as material science and technology, ultrasonic technology and computational technology. The major was selected as the first-class major of Zhejiang province in 2021. Currently, over 80% of the teachers in this major have doctoral degrees and over 40% have studied overseas. There is Zhejiang Province Demonstration Center for Physics Experimental Education, which covers nearly 3000 m² and has more than 1550 sets of equipment with a total value of over 11 million yuan. The practice base includes Zhejiang Research Institute of Quality Inspection Science, Bus Online Co.,Ltd., etc.
This major focuses on cultivating compound professionals with basic theories, basic knowledge and basic skills in physics, mathematics, computation, standards, measurement and metrology, who can be engaged in product research and development, measurement and metrology, management and other work in related technical fields, such as electric and magnetic materials, ultrasonic technology, computer and information technology. The graduates can also go to the graduate school at home and abroad for further study majoring in physics or related disciplines, such as material science and technology, electronic science and technology, information science and technology, etc. The average acceptance rate of graduate school is more than 40% in recent five years.
[Acoustics]
The major of acoustics is the only undergraduate major in acoustics in Zhejiang province, which is one of the three majors of acoustics in universities of China. It was selected as characteristic major of Zhejiang province during the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" in 2017 and the first-class major of Zhejiang province in 2019. Acoustics, the science of sound generation, transmission, reception and its effects, is an internationally recognized high-tech field and a secondary discipline of physics with distinctive demand-oriented, problem-oriented and goal-oriented characteristics, and is oriented to the major needs of the country and economy. Acoustics is a highly interdisciplinary and extended major, and its applications have penetrated into almost all important fields of natural science and engineering technology, such as national defense, electronics, communication, energy, materials, biotechnology and medicine. The major has two directions: electroacoustic engineering and ultrasound technology.
(1) Electroacoustic engineering is an interdisciplinary and application-oriented discipline supported by electronics, applied acoustics and acoustoelectric transduction principles.
